How is Curves circuit training?

It's good. It's particularly good for people who don't like "gym culture." The hydraulic machines are extremely adaptable - they push back just as hard as you push into them, so women of varying fitness levels can get different resistance from the same machine with no confusing adjustments. You don't have to count reps - just 30 seconds on each machine, and there is a voice that tells you to "change stations now" so you can just check out. A lot of the Leisure World crowd go there to gab with their friends and keep mobile, whereas I work out on the same machines and leave dripping in sweat every time. The atmosphere is fun and upbeat and the staff is universally encouraging and enthusiastic.

The only downsides to me are:

1. There is no shower.

2. They don't open early enough or close late enough.

3. Free weights and traditional machines are still probably the quickest way to build muscle mass. As adaptable as the hydraulic machines are, YOU have to be the one to create the resistance by pushing really hard. When you pick up a ten-pound weight, on the other hand, it's ten pounds of resistance no matter what (provided you are working out on Earth and not in the water). Most people don't have the focus to stay completely trained on the workout - you tend to get distracted by the other gals giggling or "i wonder what's for dinner" type thoughts.

One other thing: Curves provides fitness opportunities to women whose cultural beliefs don't allow them to work out around men, so that is pretty awesome as well.
